Arriving PictureIn the past five years, more than 80 children who participated in the S.A.F.E. Program have saved themselves or a loved one. One of these success stories occurred here in Peabody. A story about 6 year old Nicolette Buckley shown here arriving at the Welch School after a ride on Peabody Engine 5 which protects the area where Nicolette lives.

On January 4, 2001 while Nicolette was home with her mother, Denise, and her younger sister Alexandra and brother Michael a problem happened in their wood burning stove.

Lets just say mom got a little excited when this happened. She is well aware of the devastating effect that can happen from a fire in the home. Her husband, Mike, has told her many stories about fire. He just happens to be is a firefighter in the City of Malden.

Nicolette sensed the excitment in her mother and very claimly said to her "Calm down and dial 9-1-1."
The call was made and a quick response averted any serious problem. Just a few simple words that Nicolette learned in Kindergarten were all that were needed.

An engraved jewelry box was presented from the City by Fire Chief Paul Goglia. The picture to the right shows Nicolette with the firefighter Teddy Bear that was presented by Local 925 International Association of Firefighters.

Nicolette will also be receiving the Young Hero's Award from the Massachusetts
State Fire Marshal's Office.
