March 3, 1944 Firefighter
Hodgdon was taken ill while on duty the night of the snow storm on February
12th., suffering a slight heart attack after shoveling snow in front of
Headquarters. He was taken to his bed since.
Early Wednesday morning he suffered a more serious attack. In response to the call, Capt. Arthur C. Flynn and Fireman Thomas F. Prendible of Engine 1 responded with the inhalator, but after the arrival of Dr. J.W.P. Murphy, who pronounced Hodgdon beyond aid, they abandoned their efforts. The deceased, one of the most efficient and popular men in the department, was a native of Wenham where he received his early education. He came to this city some 40 years ago, and was appointed a call fireman in 1913. On Christmas Day, 1926, he was named a permanent fireman and since then had been attached either to Engine Five or the Central fire station. He was survived by his wife and six children. |
