Fire Prevention Week Information
FIRE PREVENTION WEEK (OCTOBER 6-12, 2002)

Fire Safety and Prevention involves firefighters, but they can't do it all alone. Teamwork is required for effective fire safety creating this year's theme for Fire Prevention Week "Team up for Fire Safety". The idea is to team up with people you live, work and play with to first prevent fire and then to survive one.

Three lessons everyone can learn about Fire Safety are;

1. Installing and testing smoke detectors.
2. Practicing Home Escape Plans.
3. Hunting for Home Hazards.

Peabody's public libraries will feature a display of books, pamphlets and handouts of materials related to fire safety.

On October 2, at 10:45 a.m., the South Branch Library at 78 Lynn Street will feature a fire truck with firefighters and a safety talk.

On October 9, at 3:30p.m., the West Branch Library at 603 Lowell Street will also host a Fire Safety talk along with the firefighters and a Fire Truck.

Information can also be found on this website as well as on www.firepreventionweek.org.

Fire Station tours can be arranged for details click here.

The Fire Safety Smokehouse will be at the Harvest Festival on October 27th at Brooksby Farm, Felton Street. The Smokehouse will be on site from 11a.m. to 3p.m. Also look for future dates of additional appearances.

FIRE SAFETY TIPS

  • Plan and practice a Home Fire Escape Drill.
  • Change batteries on all Smoke Detectors and test regularly. Make sure a working detector is located on every level of the home at least outside each separate sleeping area. Additionally newer or remodeled homes require smoke detectors in each bedroom.
  • Extinguish and dispose of smoking materials properly.
  • Never leave a burning candle unattended.
  • Never leave cooking unattended. Don't keep candles or flammable decorations on or above the stove. Clean the oven regularly to avoid an accumulation of grease and spills.
  • Did you know that lint from the clothes dryer is highly flammable? Keep the area around the dryer clean, keep the lint filter clean on a regular basis. Make sure the dryer vent is properly attached and exits the home.
  • Extension cords are a cause of many fires and should only be used temporarily. Be sure the cord is of proper size and length for the intended purpose. Do not wrap or coil cords in use. Contact a licensed electrician for permanent safe wiring.
  • Power outlet strips are not intended to run multiple appliances. Check the rating on the device and realize its limits.
  • Air Conditioners draw a large amount of electricity (amperage) and should be installed on a properly sized circuit. Check with a licensed electrician if you are unsure of your installation.
  • Always keep matches and lighters out of reach of children.
  • Know how to "STOP DROP and ROLL" if your clothes catch on fire.
  • Never store propane or gasoline inside your home or garage. Store them outside, away from the building and its openings.
  • Never use gasoline or other flammable fluids to clean anything.
  • Know what to do in case of a fire. (See building fires on this website under safety tips)
  • Make sure your house number is clearly visible from the street to aid emergency personnel to locate you more quickly.
